Your Help Requested for a Sustainable Winter Break!
As the winter break approaches and final exams start to wind down, the team at Northeastern’s Planning, Real Estate, and Facilities (PREF) ask that you take the time to leave your dormitory or workspace in the most energy-efficient and sustainable state while you are home enjoying time with family and friends.
Your actions will contribute to Northeastern’s energy reduction goals as we continue to invest in energy and carbon reduction projects across our campuses. For example, did you know that our Boston campus recently underwent a whole campus LED lighting retrofit? Or that EXP is seeking LEED Platinum certification?
Reduce your dorm room or workspace’s energy use while you are away
If you have a room thermostat, turn it to the lowest possible heating setting to reduce energy use.
Close all the windows in your dorm room or workspace to ensure they are secure, and close any blinds or drapes. An open window can quickly freeze water pipes on a cold day and cause water damage to your room and the rooms below.
Turn off any computers, televisions, and any other electronics. For extra effect, unplug these devices to reduce “vampire power”.
When you leave your dorm room or workspace, ensure all the lights are turned off.
Check faucets and toilets for leaks and put in a Work Order (instructions below) to have the issue repaired.
