The Facilities Trade Operations group is a customer-focused, service orientated operation. Trades Operations is responsible for in-house renovations, maintenance and repairs, and is broken down by shops. Their efforts support the University by providing a safe, clean, workable environment.
All trade work and repair requests start with a Facilities Online Work Request. This request form is accessible via your myNortheastern.edu. For any other questions or to contact someone directly, please contact the Facilities Customer Service Center.
Facilities Operations Includes The Following Trades
The Carpentry Shop staff members are highly skilled individuals who are familiar with the needs of the Northeastern University community. It is responsible for routine repairs and installations. The Carpentry Shop also produces custom work such as cabinetry, wall partitions, and shelving.
Typical projects include the following:
Repair or configuration of modular office furniture
Repair of torn carpeting
Repair of existing doors, door stops, enclosures, hinges and door closures
Replacement of acoustical ceiling tiles
Repair of molding and cove bases
Installation of chalkboards and white boards
Repair of cracked or broken windows

The Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (HVAC) unit is responsible for the corrective and preventative maintenance, as well as environmental conditions of all offices, classrooms, laboratories, kitchens, dormitories and conference spaces. The department maintains over 15,000 tons of cooling equipment and manages the maintenance of a variety of ancillary equipment necessary to the efficient operation of systems located throughout the Northeastern campuses.

The Mechanical Shop is responsible for supplying steam and hot water to over 5 million square feet of occupied space on Campus. The main source of steam is the largest low-pressure steam plant in New England. The plant has six boilers that generate 4,200 boiler horsepower at 15 PSI. The duties of the Mechanical Shop includes the maintenance and repair of pumps, burners, food service equipment, radiator controls and steam traps.

Northeastern’s painting unit ensures that the appearance of the university’s academic facilities, residence halls and research facilities are maintained in good condition to provide an environment conducive to academic growth. The university monitors the aesthetic conditions by contracting work to five painting firms, four of which are minority contractors.

Northeastern’s electrical shop is responsible for the electrical needs over 7.2 million square feet of multiple functional buildings. Service ranges from routine work orders to support of regularly occurring special events.

The Plumbing Shop is responsible for providing the Northeastern community with the best sanitary conditions and the safest, cleanest water available. They install, repair or replace plumbing fixtures and related equipment as needed. The Northeastern plumbers also attend to hot and cold water piping, clogged toilets, overflowing drains, grease traps, fire suppression (sprinkler) system repairs and replacements, as well as sanitary and storm system repairs, and also provide acid neutralization monitoring and reporting services.

The Division’s Life/Fire Safety Unit administers an aggressive program of regular inspection, testing, egress drills, and maintenance of university premises to ensure compliance with applicable fire and life safety codes and standards. The Life/Fire Safety unit also performs inspections maintenance on all University elevators and emergency electrical distribution systems.

The Sign Shop fabricates and maintains all temporary and permanent signage on the Northeastern main campus as well as its satellite campuses.
